S&P 500 Index opens flat, energy shares slide

  • Wall Street's main indexes opened near Friday's closing levels.
  • Energy shares are suffering heavy losses amid slumping oil prices.
  • S&P 500 Healthcare Index is edging higher after the opening bell.

Major equity indexes in the US started the new week in a calm manner amid a lack of significant fundamental drivers. As of writing, the S&P 500 Index was flat on the day at 4,435, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was losing 0.25% at 35,115 and the Nasdaq Composite was posting small daily gains at 14,845.

Among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, the Energy Index is losing 1.6% on the day pressured by a 2.5% decline in crude oil prices. On the other hand, the Healthcare Index is up 0.5% as the best-performing major sector after the opening bell.

Later in the session, June JOLTS Job Openings data and speeches by Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic and Richmond Federal Reserve President Thomas Barkin will be looked upon for fresh impetus.
